How to Sew in Your Own Weave

04/30/08 | by Ethnic Embrace [mail] | Categories: Hair, How To

What you'll need for this hair design with a bang:
-Rubber band and pins or clips to hold hair
-Small tooth comb for parting
-Big tooth comb for combing your ethnic hair without breaking it
-Hair (at least 2 packs for a full weave)
-Hair thread and needle
-Braiding hair (synthetic will do)

**Be prepared to spend about 2 hours braiding and about 2.5 hours sewing.
This is about how long it takes me to do mine myself.

To begin wash, dry and comb hair thoroughly!

1. Using synthetic braiding hair (especially for thin hair types and to reduce breakage for medium hair types too) begin to braid hair in a circle. I like to start mine near the front but do whatever is easiest for you if you're doing it alone.

-Have as many braids as possible but again be cautious of breakage if they are very small without the use of synthetic hair.

-Take your time and braid tight if you want to keep it in long

2. Still braiding in a circle you should finish somewhere on the top center of your head. Tie a rubberband to the roots to keep the braid in place. The hair left will help to blend the tracks in the end.

3. Begin sewing in the hair starting from the back first and moving in a circle.

-As you can see I don't sew mine entirely in a circle but more of semi-circle so I can visualize what I'm doing. I find the hair looks too thick on my head to do otherwise but the choice is yours to fill in later

4. After sewing your hair weave in it may not look all that great. You will need to carefully check for visible tracks and thinness and fill in as necessary.

Also, you may consider getting your girlfriend to cut it or going in to a salon for a cut.

If you sewed it in correctly covering the small track in the back should be easy but if this is your first time then expects flaws.

I've been doing weaves for 10 years and still am not perfect. This is only one design and there are about 5 more (atleast that I've used).

Good luck ladies and send in your pictures here or on our Facebook group!
