Tips for Chemically Relaxed Hair

05/05/08 | by Ethnic Embrace [mail] | Categories: Hair

Problems with breakage, you should:

-Moisturize your scalp. Try not to use grease because it will clog your pores and weigh down your hair.
-Deep condition your hair preferably once a week, but if you’re busy than twice a month is sufficient. Just remember, the more the merrier (see below)!
-Comb your hair starting from the tips and work your way up. This provides for less tension and breakage.
-Be gentle with your hair. Avoid pulling and tugging at it (unless your into that sort of thing :) )
-You should always protect your hair at night. Wrapping (see below) with a silk scarf is most recommended, but if you don't get along with scarves then I recommend sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase.

Problems with split ends:

-First be sure to keep all split ends trimmed, preferably every 2-4 weeks. YOU can take wonderful care of your hair and it will still never reach it's maximum potential if the ends aren't trimmed.
-Avoid heat as much as possible. If you must you should definitely invest in ceramic irons. They don't burn your hair. Always use a thermal protector before applying heat.
-Moisturize your ends. This is especially important for processed hair. Use something light, like a lotion. Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizer is good and you only need a little bit.

Problems with growing your hair long and strong, you should:

-Protect your ends at night. Again, you can do this by wrapping (see below), or moisturize your tips, put in a bun and wrap the bun with saran wrap. YOU won't believe how silky soft this will leave your hair feeling!
-Wear your hair in an up do more often to stop it from brushing up against your shoulders and neck (if it is shoulder length). This will reduce breakage also because your hair can't get snagged on your clothes (keep in mind that wearing your ponytail too tight, too often will pull your edges out).
-Comb and brush you're hair sparingly. I personally comb my hair like every 2-3 days (if that!) Being as though I sleep on a satin pillowcase, my hair doesn't get matted or tangled. I usually use my fingers to put it in a loose ponytail or bun. Lucky for me bed head is in! I also brush it back into a ponytail when it's wet from my shower and spray with some oil sheen.
-Take your vitamins. You should use multi-vitamins, B-complex, fish oil or Biotin. I found that these are the most recommended.
-Eat a high-protein, low sugar diet.

***No matter what your hair problem is, or even if you don't have any, always abide by these simple rules:
- You must drink plenty of water. This cannot be stressed enough.
- Never over process your hair with relaxers. We know you can get one every 6 weeks, but if taken care of properly a relaxer can last up to 3 months.
-Find a hair stylist you trust. I myself have learned this lesson the hard way and I don't want it to happen to you.
-Always use quality hair care products.
