It’s a competitive world out there, especially in these times, and you need to be ready for it when you graduate from college. Employer’s are looking for the best and the brightest so stay on top of your game by reviewing the tips in this article before every interview to ensure you become successful in finding employment.

I. Before the Interview

Know what it is you would like to do and refine that as much as possible. You want your career objective to be clear and concise for potential employers.

Know not only the company in which you will be interviewing with but also your industry in general. Read “How much should you be making?” and find out what skills you should possess to perform the responsibilities for the position you’d like….and work this into the next part…your resume.

Update and revise your resume! There are many services such as PSU’s MBNA Career Services Center available to help you accomplish a standout resume and help you improve your interviewing skills. They will tell you things to keep in mind when writing your resume. For instance, stick to your relevant experience and use key words. In addition, ask mentors, professors and family and friends to read over it and give you some feedback.

Alright, your hard work is almost over and done! Pat yourself on the back. All you need to do now is prepare some Q&A you think the interviewer might ask you. Here are a few you’ll want to have answers to (in no particular order):

1. What major challenges and problems have you faced? How have you handled them?
2. What did/didn’t you like about your last job?
3. What do your co-workers think of you?
4. Tell us about you.
5. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
6. Why do you want to work for/with us?
7. Are you willing to relocate?
8. Do you have any questions for us? (Definitely ask questions!)
9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
10. Why should we hire you?
11. What experience do you have to take on this position?

Remember, attending a job interview is not just about pleasing the interviewer so to get a job but you also need to be interviewing them to see if the relationship would work. If they don’t ask a question you want an answer to (location, etc. but not salary) then bring that up. It’s better you know sooner rather than later because you’re worth it.

Image is very important so do take this next tip seriously…dress appropriately! For most interviews men should wear a nice suit but noting too fancy: simple shirt and tie, matching jacket and pant. Ladies, you can do the same without the tie and you may also wear a nice skirt in place of the pant; nothing above the knee and try to wear panty-hose! Men, shave. Ladies, you too if needed…and you know who you are. Hair should be well groomed so the face is visible. And voila!
