A quick reaction after reading my nieces homework on Memorial Day. The "facts" that she came home with were ignorant and so I had to explain to her the truth:

1. Free slaves started Memorial Day in order to remember their black peers who died after the Civil War. These free slaves were from the Union.
2. The free slaves called it Decoration Day.
3. After WW1 the US then renamed it and claim it to be a day to remember all fallen soldiers in the US.

Africans started this American tradition and in her homework the only two names were Gen. John Logan and Moina Michael with not one mention of the free slaves who took it upon themselves to begin to celebrate American soldiers who died in war! Was this America's first war and inclination to celebrate the men and women who give up their lives for all of us?
